Problem Symptoms: “Every time I open Communicator, I get this error: ‘The local configuration file specified a configuration URL, but the AutoAdmin component can’t be loaded.’”
Operating Systems: Windows 3.x, Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT.
Solution:
This error will normally occur when you previously had a customized Professional Edition of Communicator installed, then upgraded to a Standard Edition of Communicator, which does not include the AutoAdmin component.
To fix the error, you can either install the Professional Edition or download a base netscape.cfg that does not try to use AutoAdmin functions.
To download and install the Professional Edition, go to Netscape’s software download page. See also Section 3, Number 14 of this FAQ for installation tips. Please Note: If you are using a customized Netscape as part of a business local area network or a similar setup, you must install the newer Professional Edition to avoid losing customizations. See your organization’s system or network administrator or IS/IT Support for more details.
The quick fix for this problem is to download a plain netscape.cfg file. Download this file, then close Communicator, open File Manager or Windows Explorer and go to your …\Netscape\Communicator\Program folder and rename netscape.cfg to netscape.cfx. Next unzip the file you downloaded to the same directory and restart. Please note that choosing this option will cause you to lose all customized features. If this is unacceptable, download the full Professional Edition as shown above.
